Target Audience:  This a full day intensive course aimed at FYs/ Core trainees/ SHOs/ Junior doctors/ SAS doctors who aim to apply for orthopaedic training in the UK. The course is considered as desirable for ST3 T&O applications.

 

Description:  The course will consist of presentations on principles of casting by eminent faculty followed by masterclass by plaster technician who will demonstrate the technique of slab and cast application. Following the masterclass, the delegates will apply different slabs and casts on one another under supervision of faculty.

At the end of the course, we expect the participants to be able to apply slabs and casts for various injuries appropriately.

 

CPD points have been applied for.  For the last Casting Course, the Royal College of Surgeons of England awarded up to 6 CPD points.

 

Aims: 

To learn about basic techniques, positions and extent of casts / slabs.

To develop an understanding of casting materials and their properties.

To learn about usage of different casting materials and cast care.

To develop awareness of the complications relating to the injuries themselves and casting materials.

 

Outcome:

Candidates should be able make decisions on the type of Cast / slab to apply to different types of injuries.

Candidates should be able to safely apply an extremity slab in an acute setting.
